Clinton County Criminal Court Records
A criminal court record is the case-level file kept once the State of Indiana files charges in court. In Clinton County, criminal matters may appear in Clinton Circuit Court or Clinton Superior Court depending on local assignment and case type. Frankfort City Court can handle local ordinance, traffic, and limited matters that may connect to a public docket. The court record is broader than the arrest or booking record. It shows how the accusation moved through court, whether charges changed, what hearings occurred, what plea or verdict was entered, and what sentence or disposition followed.
For the charge list and filing status after an arrest, the companion Clinton County arrest records and court charges page focuses on the arrest-to-charges pathway. This criminal court records page stays with the full court file. That distinction matters because a person can be arrested without a final conviction, and a case can include amended, reduced, dismissed, or disposed charges in the same record.
Search Clinton County Criminal Cases
Start with Indiana MyCase for public criminal case lookup. Search by case number when known, or use party search with last name plus first name, middle name, or date of birth. Case search may also use a cross-reference number. If a defendant has a common name, narrow carefully because the official search tips note that broad searches are capped. Open the case detail to read the chronological case summary, charges, hearings, plea entries, disposition, sentencing, financial entries, and public documents.
- Open MyCase and choose case or party search.
- Search by criminal case number, defendant name, or another supported identifier.
- Filter to Clinton Circuit Court or Clinton Superior Court if the interface offers court filters.
- Review the charge list, case status, hearing history, plea, disposition, and sentence fields.
- Contact the Clinton County Clerk for certified criminal court records or missing documents.
- Contact Clinton County Archives for older criminal records that predate current online access.
For statewide criminal-history information, IC 10-13-3 governs criminal history information held by Indiana criminal justice agencies. That is not the same as a Clinton County court file. For federal prosecutions, use the Southern District of Indiana and PACER rather than MyCase.
Clinton County Criminal Case Flow
Criminal court records are easier to read when the case stage is clear. The court file starts after charges are filed, not at the moment of arrest. Early entries may show an initial hearing or arraignment, bond conditions, counsel status, and a future hearing. Later entries may show discovery, motions, continuances, plea negotiations, trial settings, verdict, dismissal, sentencing, probation, restitution, or financial obligations. Probation and Community Corrections may appear after sentencing when a defendant is ordered into local supervision, home detention, electronic monitoring, work release, day reporting, or other programs.
Case flow: Charges Filed › Initial Hearing or Arraignment › Pretrial and Motions › Plea or Trial › Disposition › Sentencing
| Stage | What Happens |
|---|---|
| Charges filed | The prosecutor files the formal allegation with the court. |
| Initial hearing or arraignment | The court addresses rights, counsel, bond, charge notice, and next settings. |
| Pretrial and motions | Parties file requests, exchange information, set hearings, and resolve legal issues. |
| Plea or trial | The case resolves by plea, bench trial, jury trial, dismissal, or other court action. |
| Disposition | The court records the outcome for each charge. |
| Sentencing | The court orders jail, prison, probation, fines, restitution, fees, treatment, or other terms. |
The Indiana expungement statute source is relevant after a criminal case ends and a person seeks limited public access.
Expungement is a later access issue; it does not change the need to read each Clinton County criminal case stage accurately.
What Clinton County Criminal Records Show
Criminal court records contain both allegations and outcomes. A single case may show several counts, each with a statute, level, plea, amendment, dismissal, or conviction status. MyCase may show charges and docket information, while official copies come from the Clerk. The field inventory below reflects the research file's sample court-record inventory and criminal-record notes, without reproducing any named defendant record.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Case number | Indiana criminal case identifier tied to the Clinton County court file. |
| Defendant | Name of the person charged, with identifiers limited by access rules. |
| Charges | Count number, offense name, statute, level or class, offense date, and arresting agency when public. |
| Bond | Release condition, surety, cash amount, or bond-related court action when public. |
| Plea | Guilty, not guilty, or other plea entries shown by charge or case stage. |
| Disposition | Convicted, dismissed, acquitted, transferred, deferred, or otherwise resolved status. |
| Sentence | Jail, prison, probation, restitution, fines, fees, treatment, or community corrections terms. |
| Docket entries | Motions, notices, hearings, warrants, recalls, orders, continuances, and payments. |
Charges vs Convictions
A charge is an accusation filed with the court. A conviction is a final finding or plea of guilt accepted by the court. Clinton County criminal court records may show charges that were amended, reduced, dismissed, or resolved without conviction. Treat each count separately, then read the final disposition and sentence. A case header that says disposed does not always mean every original charge led to conviction.
| Point | Charge | Conviction |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | Formal accusation filed by the State. | Court finding or accepted guilty plea. |
| Timing | Early in the case, often before final proof. | After plea, trial, or other final court action. |
| Record reading | Check count, statute, level, and current status. | Check judgment, sentence, and final disposition. |
| Risk | May later be dismissed or amended. | Can trigger sentence, probation, fines, and collateral effects. |
The Indiana criminal history statute source helps separate criminal-history data from Clinton County court case records.
Criminal-history systems and court files can overlap, but they answer different Clinton County record questions.
Sealed vs Expunged Records
Restricted criminal court records require careful wording. In Indiana, expungement limits public access to qualifying arrest, charge, and conviction records under IC 35-38-9. It does not mean every government copy vanishes. Law-enforcement and court agencies may retain access for official purposes. Sealing can also limit public visibility by court order or statute. Clinton County expungement filings route through the circuit or superior court tied to the arrest, charge, or conviction.
| Point | Sealed | Expunged |
|---|---|---|
| Public visibility | Public access is blocked or limited by order or rule. | Public access is limited under Indiana expungement law. |
| Common trigger | Confidential case type, court order, protected filing, or safety concern. | Qualifying arrest, non-conviction, or conviction record after statutory conditions are met. |
| Agency access | Official access may remain for courts or law enforcement. | Official access may remain for specified government purposes. |
| Where filed | Usually in the court that controls the file. | Clinton Circuit or Superior Court when tied to Clinton County case history. |
Note: Juvenile and adoption records are not ordinary Clinton County criminal court records for public lookup.
The Indiana juvenile records source is one reason some case details never appear in public criminal searches.
Juvenile confidentiality keeps certain Clinton County case information outside ordinary public criminal court record access.
Access Clinton County Criminal Records
Public access begins with MyCase, but the Clinton County Clerk is the official record source. The Clerk is listed at 2 E Washington St. STE 304, Frankfort, phone 765-659-6335, weekday hours 8:00AM to 4:00PM. Clinton County Archives can help with older criminal records at 2 E Washington St. STE 003, phone 765-659-6369, Tuesday through Thursday. If a case is current, sealed, expunged, juvenile, or missing documents online, the Clerk can explain the next record-access step.
Criminal cases can also intersect with law-enforcement records. The Sheriff has jail, booking, records, and PREA contacts, but those are not the court case file. Use jail records to check custody or booking status, and use criminal court records to check charges, hearings, disposition, and sentence. The Sheriff PREA source is a jail-safety record source, not a court disposition source.
That Sheriff material belongs to jail administration, while Clinton County criminal court records remain with the court and Clerk.
Federal Criminal Records Distinction
Federal prosecutions involving Clinton County residents are not Clinton County criminal court records. Clinton County is in the Southern District of Indiana for federal trial court purposes, and the U.S. Attorney's Office prosecutes federal cases for that district. Federal docket and document access usually runs through PACER. A federal sentence or federal custody record may later appear through the Bureau of Prisons, not the Clinton County Jail roster or Indiana MyCase.
The U.S. Attorney source for the Southern District of Indiana identifies the federal prosecution office for cases outside Clinton County trial courts.
Use that federal source only when the case is federal; Clinton County criminal case lookup starts with MyCase and the local Clerk.
The Indiana adoption records source also reinforces that some court records are confidential by category.
That confidentiality rule is separate from ordinary criminal access, but it illustrates why court records can be public in one category and closed in another.
